Anthropology Photographic Archive - The University Of Auckland

Archive Details

The Department of Anthropology Photographic Archive is located in the General Library Special Collections Department at the University of Auckland Library. It is a closed access collection of approximately 60,000 images, (most in negative format) and fieldwork notebooks covering the ethnography of New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

The collection records early social anthropology and archaeological research expeditions in New Zealand and the Pacific from the 1950’s to around 2000. Some older photographs are in a state of deterioration. A digitization project has been completed and there is now a digital copy of every image in the collection. This involves the long-term storage of an unmodified high resolution TIFF image as a preservation master, and the creation of an enhanced JP2000 image for web delivery.

Digitized photographs are generally available freely on the Internet. Photographs copied from published sources and photographs of museum objects are restricted to staff and students of the University of Auckland for copyright reasons. Photos of culturally sensitive material are also restricted and in some cases Departmental authorization is required.

The original prints, slides and negatives are available for special research purposes. Please make appointments to use them with General Library Special Collections:
